Piling cost in Bangladesh: Types, rates and cost calculation

Piling is one of the first major costs you may face when building on weak or compressible soil. But there is no single piling cost in Bangladesh that works for every project. A 12-inch bored pile for a small residential building will not cost the same as a 24-inch pile for a heavier commercial structure. Depth matters too. So do soil conditions, pile diameter, reinforcement, concrete grade, equipment access, and the number of piles.

This is especially important in Dhaka and nearby areas such as Savar, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Keraniganj and Rupganj. Ground conditions can change even between nearby plots. A soil test and structural design therefore come before the final piling budget.

How much does piling cost in Bangladesh?

Piling rates in Bangladesh vary considerably between contractors and project locations. Published contractor estimates provide useful starting figures, but they are not verified market averages. Some quotations cover only boring, while others include concrete, reinforcement and additional work. For early budgeting, RCC bored piling can range roughly from Tk 350 to Tk 1,600 or more per running foot, depending mainly on pile diameter and what the contractor includes in the rate.

The rates below are indicative planning ranges. Before using them for your construction budget, check exactly what each contractor includes.

Pile diameter Indicative cost per running foot Approx. cost per running metre
12 inch / 300 mm Tk 350–600 Tk 1,150–1,970
14 inch / 350 mm Tk 600–780 Tk 1,970–2,560
16 inch / 400 mm Tk 550–950 Tk 1,805–3,120
18 inch / 450 mm Tk 700–1,150 Tk 2,300–3,770
20 inch / 500 mm Tk 900–1,500 Tk 2,950–4,920
24 inch / 600 mm Tk 1,200–1,600+ Tk 3,940–5,250+
Note: These figures are approximate planning estimates based on published contractor references, not fixed rates offered by Conspert Limited. Actual piling costs depend on pile diameter, depth, soil conditions, materials, site access and the contractor's scope of work. Ask for an itemised quotation based on your soil investigation and approved structural design.

Types of piling in Bangladesh and their costs

Not every pile type does the same job. Also, bored pile and cast-in-situ pile are often used as separate terms in online content, although a bored pile is commonly constructed as a cast-in-situ RCC pile.

Pile type Indicative pricing Where it is commonly considered
RCC bored cast-in-situ pile Around Tk 350–1,600+/rft depending on diameter Houses, apartments, commercial buildings
Driven precast RCC pile Around Tk 1,150–1,450/rft for a roughly 400 × 400 mm class public benchmark Residential, commercial and industrial projects
Micro/mini pile Around Tk 1,500–2,500/rft in some public market references Tight sites, strengthening and extension work
PHC pile Project-specific Factories, industrial and larger developments
Sheet pile Material can be Tk 7,000–15,000+/m plus installation Excavation support, basement and retaining work
Sand pile Usually quotation-based Ground improvement rather than normal structural piling

A 2026 market study for Dhaka placed an all-in planning benchmark for roughly 400 × 400 mm driven precast piles at around Tk 1,150–1,450 per running foot. Government schedule rates also show that precast pile casting, pile driving, and equipment mobilization can be priced as separate items.

Sheet piling is mainly used to retain soil, support excavation or control ground movement. It should not be compared directly with a bored pile carrying a building load. Current public references in Bangladesh put common steel sheet pile material at roughly Tk 7,000–15,000+ per metre, with driving or installation charged separately.

Factors that affect piling cost in Bangladesh

The pile rate itself tells only part of the story. A realistic budget needs to look at the full site condition.

  • Soil condition and pile depth: Soft upper layers may force the engineer to take the pile deeper before reaching a suitable bearing layer. More depth means more boring or driving, concrete, steel, and working time.
  • Pile diameter: Diameter has a large effect on concrete volume. It may also change reinforcement requirements and the equipment needed for construction.
  • Number of piles: A building with 20 piles obviously uses more material than one with 10. However, larger projects may spread rig mobilization costs across more piles.
  • Structural load: Building height alone does not decide the pile design. Column loads, layout, structural system and future loading all matter.
  • Site access: This becomes a practical issue in Dhaka. A narrow road, congested neighbourhood or restricted working space can make it harder to bring in a drilling rig, crane, concrete mixer or precast piles.
  • Groundwater and bore stability: Bored pile work below groundwater may need casing, drilling slurry or additional control during concreting.
  • Steel and concrete prices: Piles consume significant reinforcement and concrete. Changes in these material prices move the final quotation.
  • Location: Projects outside a contractor's normal equipment area can carry extra transport, accommodation or mobilization costs.

Piling cost breakdown: Materials, labour and equipment

Before comparing two quotations, check what each contractor has actually included.

Cost item How it affects the budget
Boring or pile driving Equipment, fuel, operator, and working time
Reinforcement steel Steel cage, fabrication, binding, and placement
Concrete Quantity rises quickly with pile diameter and depth
Casing or drilling slurry May be needed where the bore is unstable
Labour Cage preparation, concreting and supporting site work
Mobilization Moving rig, crane and equipment to and from the site
Testing Load test, integrity test or other specified tests
Pile head work Cutting, breaking and preparation before pile cap
Pile cap and grade beam Normally treated as separate foundation work

This last point causes a lot of budgeting confusion. Piling cost and complete foundation cost are not necessarily the same thing. A quotation for piles may exclude pile caps, grade beams, excavation, earthwork and other foundation items.

How soil testing affects piling cost

Do not decide that your house needs a 50-foot or 70-foot pile just because a neighbouring building used that depth. A soil investigation gives engineers information about the soil layers and their resistance at different depths. The structural engineer combines this information with building loads to select the foundation system.

Piling cost in Bangladesh for residential and commercial building construction

For one plot, a shallow foundation may work. Another site may need bored or driven piles. Even where both buildings use piles, the diameter, depth and quantity may differ.

That is why a preliminary budget should always be updated after the soil report and structural design are available.

How to calculate piling cost: Step-by-step example

For a simple first-stage estimate, you can use:

Estimated pile work = Number of piles × Average pile depth × Rate per running foot

Then add the items that are outside the selected running-foot rate. For example, suppose the preliminary design for a residential project shows:

16 piles × 55 feet = 880 running feet

If the selected pile is around 350 mm and you use an indicative planning rate of Tk 600–780 per running foot:

880 × Tk 600 = Tk 528,000

880 × Tk 780 = Tk 686,400

So the basic pile-line budget would be roughly Tk 5.28–6.86 lakh.

This is only a budgeting example, not a foundation recommendation. Mobilization, testing, casing, pile head work, pile caps, grade beams, and other items can take the final amount higher.

Piling cost for a 3-, 4-, or 5-storey building in Bangladesh

There is no safe way to price a 3, 4 or 5-storey house from floor count alone. For early planning, the process should be simple. First complete the soil investigation. Then let the structural engineer calculate column loads and foundation requirements. Once you know the pile type, diameter, estimated depth and number of piles, contractors can quote the same scope. This makes quotation comparison much easier.

For example, a low price per foot may look attractive until you discover that steel, concrete, pile testing or rig mobilization is excluded. Another contractor may quote a higher rate but include most of those items. Compare the total scope, not just one rate.

How to prepare a more accurate piling budget

Before requesting a final price, keep the soil report, structural drawings, pile schedule and site location ready. Ask each bidder to quote against the same specification.

The quotation should also make clear whether boring or driving, reinforcement, concrete, casing, pile head breaking, machinery, mobilization, testing, VAT and other charges are included.

That small step makes a big difference. You can compare like with like instead of choosing a low rate that later grows through additional charges.

FAQs about piling cost in Bangladesh

Here are quick answers to some of the most common questions people ask about piling cost, depth, soil testing, and foundation planning in Bangladesh.

RCC bored piling can roughly range from Tk 350 to Tk 1,600+ per running foot based on diameter and project scope. Large piles, difficult soil, and deeper drilling can cost more.

There is no single rate. For common residential-sized bored piles, public 2026 references show rates starting around Tk 350–600 per foot for smaller diameters and increasing as diameter and specification rise.

It depends on the design and soil. A smaller bored pile may have a lower unit rate, but choosing a pile only because it is cheaper is unsafe. The structural and geotechnical requirements come first.

Pile depth depends on the soil profile and required capacity. Two nearby houses can require different depths. Use the soil investigation and structural design rather than a standard depth.

Not always, but access can increase the cost. Narrow roads, limited working space, traffic restrictions and equipment setup can make some Dhaka sites more difficult than open sites.

Not necessarily. Contractors often treat pile caps, grade beams and other foundation work separately. Ask for an itemized quotation before comparing prices.

Ideally, provide the soil report, structural pile schedule, pile diameter, depth, quantity, concrete and reinforcement specifications, project location and access details.
